Thompson is primarily interested in studying thermal radiation and radiative thermal transport in particular, as various nanoscale effects may be employed to both enhance and actively control radiative heat transfer in ways that are not expected based on the classical radiation theory of Max Planck. Insights from these studies could potentially impact a range of technologies such as thermal energy storage, infrared imaging and spectroscopy, as well as thermophotovoltaic and pyroelectric energy conversion.
